What Stores Are Open and Closed on Labor Day 2021?
This Labor Day is definitely looking different. As people return to shopping in-store this holiday weekend, I want to give you information about which retailers are planning to be open, as well as which have announced they will be closed on September 6. Plus, I’ll include the stores limiting and adjusting their hours on Labor Day.
Some of us are getting Monday off, but many major establishments, restaurants and chain stores are planning to remain open. Because Labor Day is a federal holiday, all state and federal workers are likely to have the day off. This means you should expect places like liquor stores, banks and postal offices to be closed.
I’ll dive into the specifics to make sure you’re prepared!
Liquor Stores
Because many states’ liquor sales and distribution are controlled by the state, most liquor stores have to be closed on Labor Day by law.
But not all! These states do not have state-controlled liquor sales and distribution: Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Oklahoma, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington D.C. and Wisconsin.
If you live in any of these states, your local liquor store will individually determine if they will remain open on September 6. Check with them to make sure you’re in the loop!
Banks
Banks will be closed on September 6. Because Labor Day is technically a bank holiday, all physical bank locations have to be closed. But, to help you out, all ATMs and online banking services will still be available for you to use.

Post Offices
Post offices are closed on September 6, so you will not get any mail delivered. Going even further, because Labor Day is an official federal holiday, all state and federal government offices will also be closed. This includes UPS and FedEx.
Restaurant and Store Hours on Labor Day
Most restaurants and stores are open on Labor Day. Be sure to check with your local businesses just in case. Below are hours for popular stores and restaurants.
