The New Audi A6 Allroad Destroys The Competition In Safety Tests – The Unofficial Audi Blog

Last year Audi announced the release of the upcoming 2020 Audi A6 Allroad – the latest addition to its range of spacious estate vehicles. Now the Institute for Highway Safety has cited the car as its top pick for safety after it earned top score across all six judgment criteria.

The six crashworthiness criteria were head restraint and seats, chassis strength, overlap front,
overlap passenger side, and overlap driver’s side. The judges measured the vehicle’s response across all of these dimensions, attempting to assess the extent of the damage and how it might affect passengers. For each criterion, the car could earn a score of poor, marginal, acceptable, or good. The A6 Allroad achieved “good” on every front, cementing it as one of the best cars to buy if you want to avoid injury on the road.

The new Audi A6 was the best all-rounder in its class, beating out the competition from a variety of other manufacturers including German rivals BMW and Mercedes.

Why the German carmaker is taking this approach shouldn’t be a surprise. Collisions cost the country an estimated $23 billion in medical care every year. It is an enormous cost, much of which drivers themselves must bear.

The new chassis and crumple-zone technology on the vehicle are designed to prevent many of the problems that dog other cars in its class. Designers wanted to create a vehicle where the side panels and engine compartment wouldn’t invade the cabin. Thus, they designed a chassis to transmit the shock of an impact around passengers to soak up the energy. Now the vehicle dissipates energy to the rear instead of through the cabin itself.

The Audi A6 Allroad does this through intelligent engineering of the cabin compartment and reinforcement beams. Engineers designed the frame to deform in places that would not place the occupants at risk.

The Institute for Highway Safety also awards crash prevention scores for vehicles with active collision prevention systems. The scale runs from basic to advanced and superior. The Audi A6 Allroad earned the superior rating for its crash-detection system.

The organization also rates the quality of a vehicle’s headlights, which is essential for preventing collisions at night. Again, the scale runs from basic to good, with the new Audi earning good for its LEDs.

We shouldn’t underestimate the achievement of the 2020 A6 Allroad in these tests. The Institute for Highway Safety only gave one other vehicle the top rating, the 2020 Genesis G70. No other car, in its view, managed to achieve the same high standards.

For Audi lovers like you, this is good news. The A6 Allroad has always been a no-compromise vehicle, but these latest safety results take this to the next level. Choosing this vehicle is an excellent option if you want the best of both worlds: outstanding performance and fabulous safety.

If the A6 isn’t your bag, the A7 came in a close second in the tests, providing you with a slightly sportier version of the vehicle you know and love.
