Is the B8 Audi S4 Avant Better Than We Remember?

Of all the Audi S4 Avant generations, the one that goes most unloved is the B8 generation. The B7-gen S4 is widely regarded as the best, the B5-gen S4 is the original and therefore beloved, and the B9-gen is the current car, so it’s fresh in our minds. The B6 S4 was essentially the same as the B7, just with slightly older looking styling. That leaves the B8-gen Audi S4 Avant as the most forgotten and unloved. However, does it deserve to be or is it actually better than we remember?

In this new video from JayEmm, we get to take a look at a B8.5 (post facelift) Audi S4 Avant and why it’s actually an underrated daily driver.

Under the hood of the B8 Audi S4 lies a 3.0 liter supercharged V6, which made 333 horsepower when new. That engine came with a choice of two transmissions; a six-speed manual or a seven-speed dual-clutch. The car in this video uses the latter, which is actually shockingly good, despite its age. Shifts are smooth and quick, while also being easy to use around town. The engine also pulls well from low in the rev range and makes a good noise, though it does run out of puff at around 4,000 rpm.

It also rides really well. Despite being a relatively sporty car, the Audi S4 Avant rides very comfortably, even in sport mode over bumpy British roads. For any Audi enthusiasts look to get one for their daily drive, its impressive comfort will likely be a big bonus.

Though, it isn’t the most engaging sports car, mostly due to its steering. For the B8.5 facelift, the Audi S4 Avant received a new electric power steering system, which replaced the old hydraulic system, and it kills feel and engagement. So if you’re looking for a B8 S4, get the pre-facelift car for the better steering and deal with having the slightly older headlights and taillights.
